Step into the heart of China’s southwest and experience a journey that flows from Chongqing’s misty cityscapes to the mythical landscapes of the Yangtze River. This 5-day journey blends vibrant local life, UNESCO heritage sites, Taoist folklore, live cultural performances, and breathtaking gorge cruising.

About this Journey

The Yangtze, stretching over 6,300 kilometers, is China’s longest river. Like Egypt’s Nile or India’s Ganges, it has long served as a backbone of civilization — shaping agriculture, trade, belief systems, and poetry for over three millennia.

This journey begins in Chongqing — a mountain metropolis of futuristic skylines, suspended monorails, and mist-filled ravines. The city’s vertical terrain gives it a surreal, sci-fi atmosphere, earning it the nickname “cyberpunk city.” Yet beyond its cinematic skyline lies something deeper: a living city where modern China rises directly from ancient terrain.

About an hour beyond the city, we visit the Dazu Rock Carvings — Chongqing’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved into hillside cliffs over 1,200 years ago, these open-air sculptures blend Buddhist, Daoist, and Confucian symbolism into a remarkably preserved gallery of spiritual life.

From there, the route flows downstream to Yichang. Today, the Yangtze cruise is one of Asia’s last great river journeys. Along the way, travelers will pass ancient port towns, Taoist ghost cities, riverside theaters, and enter the stone folds of the Three Gorges. This is also a rare opportunity to witness Earth's geological story: layered rock formations over 200 million years old, towering cliffs, and landscapes that tell of the planet’s deep past.

We created this route not just to show you what’s visible — but to give shape to what’s often felt: that beneath China’s speed lies sediment, structure, soul.

Itinerary

  • Arrive in Chongqing and check into your hotel with a private airport pickup.

Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s photogenic alleyways and hidden shrines on a guided walk through iconic neighborhoods such as Hongya Cave, Longmenhao Old Street, and Laojun Taoist Shrine.

Wrap up your first day with a curated sunset dinner — either above the skyline or by the river over bubbling hotpot.

  • After checkout, travel to the UNESCO-listed Dazu Rock Carvings, where Buddhist art meets mountain cliffs in intricate reliefs.

In the afternoon, join a hands-on lantern-making workshop with local artisans in a rural village — a rare chance to connect with living folk traditions.

In the evening, board your cruise at Chaotianmen Port and begin your journey along the Yangtze River, welcomed with a buffet dinner and optional cocktail with the captain.

  • Awaken to misty river views. Disembark for a shore excursion to Fengdu Ghost City — a Taoist spiritual world filled with myth, symbolism, and scenic cable rides.

In the afternoon, witness an epic riverside performance, War Flames of the Three Kingdoms, before returning onboard for a guided visit to the ship’s captain’s bridge and an optional nightcap at the upper deck bar.

  • Start your day with a moderate hike to the "Top of the Three Gorges" viewpoint overlooking Qutang Gorge.

Back onboard, cruise through the majestic Wuxia Gorge and marvel at the engineering feat of the Three Gorges Ship Lock.

Spend your final evening under the stars — with options for hotpot dinner, a quiet drink, or simply soaking in the serenity of the river.

  • Disembark in Yichang with the option to explore a local tribe village or countryside retreat before your onward transfer to Wuhan, Zhangjiajie, or back to Chongqing. Whether by private car or high-speed train, your journey concludes with ease and care.
